FS-QPlay Server Workflow

Providing a reliable solution for 24/7 Broadcast Automation is essential for any size of studio. The FS-QPlay Server and technology makes this task not only possible but flexible, adaptable to your needs and affordable. The FS-QPlay servers are based on completely in-house hardware and software design with industry-proven reliability. Several levels of integration and types of workflow are available for most type of applications: from personal Internet broadcasting to multi-channel cable/satellite broadcast companies.

The entire cycle of ingestion, editing, CG overlay (titling), playout can ALL be done inside a single box. For larger installations, ingestion, editing and CG overlay design can be offloaded to a dedicated to one or more FD1000 workstations, while FS1000 server(s) would be dedicated to playout only. The most advanced FS1100 systems can be used when full time ingest and playout are required.

Highly Integrated Broadcast Control

The FS-QPlayOut Server is an evolutionary digital system which truly integrates everything for operation in broadcast studios eliminating all the legacy peripherals and video tapes. It can be used with an internal or network-attached hard disk drive storage system eliminating the need to store and catalogue hundreds of tapes.
FS servers include A/V switcher, ingestion, multi-layer title and logo insertion, multi-format scheduler, mixer and playout server. The server can either be controlled in the studio or from a remote site by network or GPI. The server can also be integrated with external audio and video switcher and mixer for additional I/O capabilities.
The most advanced models of FS servers can continuously get live video and audio for storing on hard disk drives. The provided software enables real time selection of desired A/V fragments through an timeline-type interface. The playback of selected clips can be scheduled and performed without stopping/pausing of the input process.

Timeshifting and Re-broadcasting

Automatic re-broadcasting in different countries and time zones is now a simple process done through PostPlay™ technology (included in FS1100 server) combined with standard playout scheduling (of FS1000 models). The incoming cable/satellite feed (from IRD) is continuously ingested and stored in a special hard disk storage space organized as a circular buffer. The stored video and audio content can be previewed in real time, without interruptions and organized into clips containing segments of the video to be re-broadcasted. The desired clips can be scheduled for playback in any required order and at any time later, providing the time-shift effect. The amount of time-shift can range from a few seconds to several days. The maximum amount of time shift is determined by the capacity of the video/audio storage, which can be created using either local or high-speed remote HDD subsystems. Just like with normal video files, time-shifted clips can be included in to the playout along with overlay graphics and ad clip insertions.

Playout Scheduling

Create, organize and execute the entire daily or weekly program list automatically. You can define the starting time (relative or absolute) adjust duration and other properties of any item in the schedule list. The list may consist of any combination of local or networked video and audio files, images, overlay graphics and titles, live video feeds from multiple sources as well as PostPlay™ clips. Multiple play lists can be linked together and switched automatically. In case of unexpected problems, the manual override controls are provided as well but can be disabled by the operator.

Multi-Layer Titling

All titling elements including static or dynamic logos, crawl line, banners, caption, flash, video, etc., can be used for simple overlaying of TV channel logo and crawl line playback as well as for creating complex projects such as information channels with SMS-chat and voting. Organize all broadcast overlays within the Playout server (FS series) or from its dedicated Editing system (FD series).

Image Updater

This up-scaled system presents real-time data update technology in a smart way. The dynamic data sources including system's time, outside temperature, internet, and simple text files are operated together with the Image Updater application which allows instant formation of images based on such dynamic data received. The feature enables users to change informative news and data quickly as it automatically takes in as an "image" and uploads instantly.

”Cue Tone” Auto Detect

Cue tone is generic name for a method of automatic ad insertion during re-broadcast from a master program. The cue tone software running on the regional (re-broadcasting) station that can be configured to detect a specialized DTMF tone embedded into incoming the audio feed from the master station. An event caused by detection of the pre-defined DTMF tone will be transmitted to the playout server (FS series) which will interrupt the central program with one or more local advertisement clips.

Built-in Audio Mixer and Delayer

No playout automation solution would be complete without an ability to handle multiple audio inputs and provide multiple audio outputs. All FS series servers have a built-in digital audio mixer that supports both analog and digital inputs/outputs.

 • Up to 6 analog or 2 digital audio inputs/outputs
 • Selectable delay per channel (up to 1000 ms)
 • Available multiple simultaneous outputs

Automate Content Library

Collect and classify advertising materials easily. Our bundled software that closely integrates with broadcast servers allows all video materials to be stored in one location while giving an option to prepare insert-ready blocks, customize classifications with highlights, casts, and different design and elements. The system automatically forms on-air play lists as it copies video files simultaneously and makes content registration process simple.

SMS Chat

Interactive program featuring SMS chat or SMS feedback messaging are increasingly popular among viewers and the program providers alike. The powerful CG overlay and titling engine built into all FS series servers provide users with convenient way to display SMS on the screen. The users would just need to provide a small software module that would link them to the SMS service provider message pool (DB). For more details, contact your dealer or Darim Technical Support.

Redundancy

No matter how reliable the hardware and stable the software is, there’s always a possibility of a module failure or even a human error.

Therefore, it is mandatory for a Broadcast Automation solution to have a fail-safe option, which can be used in case of minor failure or a major disaster to minimize the damage to the program on air. Darim's FS series of servers have hardware and software mechanisms to provide automatic mirroring of the server operation and failure notification. The Watchdog module can be connected to each of the FS servers via USB in order to provide monitoring and automatic notification for most failures of software and hardware. The notification is provided by closing or opening the GPI output connection, which can be linked to a fail-over switch or similar equipment. However, a truly Reliable Broadcast Automation solution requires significant amount of additional third-party hardware to be included into the solution. That includes, satellite or cable IRD, high speed and high-reliability storage, network as well as failover switch box.

The following diagram shows an example of 1+1 redundancy for a PostPlay (FS1100) server with ability to provide bypass IRD-to-PGM path in the unlikely event of simultaneous malfunction of both systems
